Taking Care Of Fine Jewellery

Here are our top tips to help you take care of your fine jewellery.
We believe fine jewellery should be cherished and worn every day. To help you maintain the beauty and integrity of your treasured pieces, we recommend following these simple care tips.
Shower and Beauty Routine
Remove your jewellery before showering or applying lotions and perfumes, and always put it on after these products have fully dried. This step is especially important for pearls, since lotions and perfumes can damage the delicate nacre that gives them their beautiful glow.
Storage
Before bedtime, lay your jewellery out flat on a fabric surface to avoid scratching and/or tangling.
Store your pieces in separate jewellery pouches or the boxes it came in, to avoid scratching metal and damaging stones during travel.

Swimming
Avoid wearing your jewellery in the pool (chlorine or salt) or ocean. Pool chemicals like chlorine can tarnish, erode, and reduce the shine of your jewellery.
The combination of cold water and potential impact can also increase the risk of losing rings.
Exercise
Don't exercise with your rings on. The pressure of weights can cause your rings to get scratched, damaged or bent during weightlifting or other exercise activities.
We recommend a similar approach to earrings, necklaces and bracelets, since it can get caught on equipment. It is a good idea to avoid wearing your jewellery to the gym, this will increase the longevity of your pieces and reduce the risk of getting it lost or damaged.
Cleaning and Other Household Tasks
Remove your rings before cleaning or working with harsh chemicals. Bleach and other cleaning products can significantly alter or ruin the appearance of precious gemstones and metals.

Clean Your Jewellery At Home
You can clean your jewellery pieces at home using a soft toothbrush and dishwashing liquid. Brush the metal and diamonds gently and rinse with clean water.
We don’t recommend using ultrasonic cleaners for our jewellery.
Professional Service
White gold rings should be rhodium plated annually, if the industrial white colour is desired.
Check your ring regularly for loose stones. If you feel or hear a tapping sound, your stone is loose in its setting. Reach out to us to have your ring serviced.
Huggies and Hoops
Specific care is also important for certain pieces, such as our huggies and hoops:
Our solid gold huggies and hoops have been a client and founder favourite since their launch in 2020. Take care when opening your huggies and hoops. When opening, gently pull each side apart, only enough to comfortably fit on your ear. Place the pin in your ear and click the two sides together, ensuring they are securely fastened. To maintain the integrity of the hinge, avoid excessive opening.

Pearls
Pearls are soft and natural (their glow comes from a layer called nacre), so they need a few gentle habits to stay beautiful.
Always Put Your Pearls On Last
This step is very important, especially for pearls. Finish your makeup, hair, lotions and perfumes first. Wait until everythings has completely dried on your skin, then put on your pearls.
Always take pearls off before exercise, housework, or anything sweaty.
Clean Them Gently
After every wear, gently wipe each pearl with a soft, clean cloth (microfibre or cotton) to remove skin oils and dirt before they build up. For a little extra cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth. If they’re visibly dirty, you can dampen the cloth with lukewarm water and a drop of very mild soap. Wipe gently, never soak the pearls or the string.
Let them dry completely on a soft towel before putting them away or wearing them again.
Store Them Safely
Keep pearls separate from other jewellery, since they scratch easily because they’re very soft. Use a soft pouch, silk bag, or store them in the box they came in. Lay necklaces and bracelets flat or gently coiled, don’t hang them.
Wearing your pearls often helps them stay lustrous because your skin’s natural oils keep them slightly moist.
Restring Regularly
The silk thread stretches, weakens, and picks up dirt over time. If you wear your pearl necklace or bracelet often, have it professionally restrung once a year.

Insurance
When it comes to caring for your jewellery, one of the best things you can do is to have it insured to protect your piece against loss, theft or damage. Should you need valuation certificates for your Kolmio pieces, don't hesitate to reach out to us.
